1. Конструкція “There іs/are”
Використовується для повідомлення про місце перебування (або відсутності) нових (тобто таких, які не згадувалися раніше) об’єктів. Для вживання цієї конструкції необхідно, як мінімум, дві умови:
1) наявність обставини місця, тобто частини речення, що відповідає на питання “де?”;
2) необхідність повідомлення про місце перебування нового об’єкта (об’єктів), який/які не згадувалися раніше.
В українській мові нова інформація, як правило, розташовується наприкінці речення (наприклад: “На стіні годинник”), а відома – на початку речення (наприклад: “Годинник на стіні”). Тому, хоча в обох реченнях є обставина місця й усі слова однакові, англійською вони будуть виглядати по-різному. Перше речення можна перекласти як: There іs a clock on the wall, а друге – як: The clock іs on the wall.
Таким чином, з конструкцією there іs/are вживаються тільки іменники з неозначеним артиклем (злічувані, в однині), або без артикля (множина або незлічувані). Іменники з означеним артиклем у цій конструкції зазвичай не вживаються.
Механізм побудови речення з розглянутою конструкцією можна показати так:
There іs/are + нова інформація + обставина місця
У множині в заперечному реченні з цією конструкцією вживається не not, а no (або not any):
There are no (not any) books on the table. – На столі ніяких книг немає.
